Duke Energy Marshall Steam Station – Charlotte, NC
Project Overview
Work at the Marshall Steam Station near Charlotte, NC called for above ground temporary force mains piping (twin 12” O.D. HDPE pipe) to be anchored every 10’ using Platipus S8 pipe buoyancy control systems which includes two S8A anchors, stainless steel connectors, coated Nylon webbing (strapping), and a ladder buckle.
Solution
The engineer of record selected the S8 “pipe kits” after consulting with Platipus. Calculations included determining the ballast required to stabilize the pipe against lateral forces, they also analysed theoretical behaviour (pull out performance) of various sized anchors in the soils 5-7’ below the temporary pipe. It was determined that S8 anchors, each tensioned to 1 ton would satisfy the engineer’s factors of safety requirements, while costs, relative ease of installation, and availability have led to additional successful installations on subsequent phases of work at the site where temporary above ground force mains have been required.

Cortez Plaza East – Manatee County, FL
Project Overview
Engineers faced with replacement of the existing stormwater conveyance system at the Cortez Plaza East in Bradenton, FL were aware their options for ballasting the Duramax 72” pipe would be a challenge.
Solution
They were dealing with saturated soils and a high water table, Platipus Engineers and technical staff were able to assist the project’s engineers in selection of the Platipus B4 10 Ton pipe buoyancy control system to economically and effectively resist uplift forces. 3 B4 pipe kits (each kit includes 2 anchors, strapping and a load retention buckle) were specified to be installed for every 20’ of pipe, a total of 344 kits were successfully installed.

Union Station – Denver, CO
Project Overview
Denver Union Station is a beautifully restored historic train station located in the present day LoDo district of the Mile High City. Originally opened in 1881, the Station has experienced several extensive renovations, the most recent commencing in 2012.
When the latest revival of the old building was completed in 2014, the Station would house not only the main rail station for the city but also a central bus hub and a light rail stop. Restaurants, retail space and the Crawford Hotel help to make Denver Union Station a destination in itself; much more than just a transportation center.
The installation of Platipus Tree Anchoring Systems was an easy and efficient way to provide the stability and security needed for newly planted trees. Using subsurface anchors around the rootballs assured the safety of the many pedestrians visiting Denver Union Station without distracting from the charm of the landscape plan.

Hall Arts – Dallas, Texas
Project Overview
Located in the downtown Dallas Arts District, HALL Arts is a LEED Gold mixed-use urban development designed to integrate restaurant, retail, and commercial office spaces with an emphasis on open green space. The development also includes the “Texas ArtWalk,” an outdoor sculpture garden bridging Flora St. and Ross Ave.
The Office of James Burnett (OJB) features trees throughout the development on rooftop gardens and terraces to provide a working livable environment. The planting of the trees on-structure could only be stabilized with the use of the Platipus Deadman Fixing System by creating anchoring points below the rootball using concrete sleepers. The streetscape surrounding the development was also improved by street trees anchored with the Platipus Rootball Fixing System allowing for a safe and aesthetically pleasing landscape.

One La Jolla Center, California
Project Overview
One La Jolla Center is a 15 story LEED Gold business building that completes the La Jolla Center “superblock”. The building offers 360 degree views from all floors, an onsite café, smart car charging stations and an outside landscaped workspace.
The outside workspace connects the building and an adjacent multilevel parking structure. In this area 30′ palms were secured, over structure, using the Platipus Deadman 4 Leg System with stainless steel tendon for permanent anchoring. The system removed the need for any above ground hazards (wood bracing) providing safety and stability while offering an instant “finished” appearance.
